East End Studios has filed plans with the city of Los Angeles for 16 soundstages positioned on 15 acres.

East End Capital will build the 720,400 square-foot studio as competition amid streaming platforms head up. They’re not the only company with grand plans, as Atlas Capital Group is building 17 soundstages and 212,300 square feet of offices at the former Los Angeles Times printing plant. Meanwhile, Shadowbox Studios is building a massive 1.3 million-square-foot studio campus featuring 19 soundstages in Santa Clarita.

East End Studios has plans to replace two warehouse buildings with 16 soundstages and a Class A office space in four buildings on the corner of Sixth and Alameda streets. The soundstage area will total 321,520 square feet with 292,310 square feet of creative space. The plans also include 106,570 square feet of production support space and around 1,300 parking spots.

According to the Commercial Observer, East End paid around $240 million in May 2022 for the property located at 1338 East 6th Street. The development will be the company’s fifth studio project – East End has four in the Los Angeles area and one in New York City.

“The existing and proposed amenities in the area, the sheer size of the property, and the billions of dollars of nearby transit investment represented an unmatched opportunity to bring desperately needed modern production space to Los Angeles,” says Shep Wainwright, Managing Partner of East End Studios.

“By taking a vertical approach to the campus design, we free up valuable land area for larger studios and base camps while also creating better pedestrian and vehicular circulation between soundstages and creative workplace space,” adds Architecture Firm Grimshaw’s Andrew Byrne.

“At East End Studios’ ADLA Campus, shown in an artist’s rendering, people will collaborate and move about on landscaped outdoor terraces while vehicles move below between soundstages and production basecamps,” East End Studios shared on Instagram about the upcoming campus.
