Elden Ring is an online game where anyone can leave a message to hopefully help other players. In this case, a player read a message that ended up leading to their demise.

FromSoftware’s latest game Elden Ring is another addition to their Soulsborne genre joining the Dark Souls series, Bloodborne, and Sekiro, with the story being written by George R. R. Martin (Game of Thrones). It plays very similar to Dark Souls in gameplay and combat but in a more open-world non-linear setting. The story is set in the “Lands Between” follows the player character called “the tarnished.”

Reddit user xTurki shared a video of themselves playing Elden Ring where they seem to be walking through a cave-like structure. They walk towards a ladder where a message has been left on the ground for players to read. Once they get close enough to read it, it says “are you ready?” just as multiple enemies descend on the player. They try to get away but are killed almost instantly as the enemies ambush them.

The Soulsborne games are known for their high difficulty even in the easiest setting, but that’s what fans love about them. There’s a good reason Elden Ring is one of the highest-rated games at the moment and this captured moment of gameplay is a testament to that in a way. The messages are generally meant to be used to help other players. This video is an example of how anything can happen when players go up and read these messages with their guard down.

This is not particularly a bad thing, since the Soulsborne games are so difficult, it’s helpful to have these messages around. Instances such as this are part of what makes the game fun, other than the character creator that can also be used to make such characters as Master Roshi from Dragon Ball in Elden Ring. It also makes the game feel a bit like a community effort where the players can help each other or just play jokes.

With that in mind, messages like this can be a bit of an annoyance to the player base. Comment from user HouseAnt0 on the Reddit post says “Troll messages can get tiring tbh, lol.” And they’re not wrong, since messages like this can ruin the game for some players who just don’t want to be trolled like this in a game like Elden Ring. That being said, not all messages that aren’t tips can be considered trolling. Some can even be references to beloved franchises like Lord of the Rings if placed in the right areas.

Elden Ring is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
