Serena Williams Admits Feeling ‘Bored’ With Retirement

Serena Williams at 2022 US Open - Day 3

Serena Williams might not be saying a complete goodbye to her tennis racket just yet!

In August, the tennis world was hit with the news that Williams was “evolving” away from the sport she dominated. By early September, she played her final professional game at the US Open and bid the world of competitive sport goodbye.

However, since retiring, the record-breaking tennis player has teased fans about a possible comeback while never saying never, as evident in a recent social media post.

Serena Williams Admits Feeling ‘Bored’ With Retirement

On Thanksgiving Eve, Williams took to her Instagram Story to possibly hint at a retirement u-turn. She shared a picture of her tennis racket covered in nylon branded with the letter S which represents her fashion brand “S By Serena.” The new racket lay on the floor against a grey background that was similar to the floor of a court.

Across the inviting picture of the racket, the legendary athlete wrote, “I’m a little bored.” Last month during a public appearance, the 23-time Grand Slam singles winner got candid about the possibility of fans ever seeing her do her magic on the court.

While chatting with TechCrunch deputy editor Jordan Crook at a tech event for her company Serena Ventures, the mother-of-one opened up about her deck to use the word “evolution and not retirement. Williams maintained that she is never retired as she doesn’t like the word, something Crook strongly agreed to.

Then the big question of if she’ll ever play came up with Crook asking, “But it sounded like you were on the fence at the U.S. Open. I know you haven’t thought about it much in the last four weeks being so busy, but what are the chances that we get to see you play again?”

Gracefully, Williams responded, saying, “The chances are very high. You come to my house; I got a court.”

Williams Has Praises For Tom Brady, Who Un-retired

Back in September, barely a month after she hung up the racket, the 41-year-old sent her fans spiraling down the rabbit hole after she made a comment that insinuated she was making a comeback.

As The Blast reported, the iconic tennis player made a stop at Jimmy Fallon’s “The Tonight Show,” and the pair got into a discussion about her tennis career. After speaking at length about the journey that led to the difficult decision and the relief she had about telling the world, Williams dropped the bomb.

Fallon said to her, “There’s no chance of you pulling a Tom Brady and saying, ‘Maybe I’m evolving to coming back,” to which Williams jokingly responded, “You know what? Tom Brady started an amazing trend. That’s what I want to say.”

After a thunderous laugh from the audience and host, the Florida native for candid about her future in the sports, saying, “I think retirement is something that’s super-earned, that people work really hard for. But I just feel like I’m at an age where I definitely have a lot more to give, there’s a lot more I want to do, and so, I’m not going to be relaxing, there is so much more for me, and I feel it’s more like an evolution of Serena.”

She noted that there have been several things she had wanted to do for years — one of which is to give her daughter, Olympia, a sibling — and now seems like the perfect time to tick off those things.

Although Williams has spent almost her whole life playing tennis, she wasted no time adjusting to a life off the court. Days after her final match at the US Open, the businesswoman gave fans a glimpse into her life post-retirement.
