Raku recently committed to a plant-based diet, maintaining that it helped her lose weight. “Turning vegan was something that was really not on my mind. But it was a sudden calling that I got and I stopped feeling the desire to eat non-vegetarian food. The more I got into meditation, the more I started to feel a difference on days that my diet was vegetarian. Although I would not eat meat at every meal, I felt nicer when I consumed vegan and vegetarian food,” she told Health Shots. “After trying this for a month, I decided maybe I want to continue this. I saw a difference in my skin and I felt much lighter. What was very exciting for me was I could eat dal chawal and sabzi, and not put on weight. On the contrary, I was shedding weight initially, and I felt much lighter, even though I was eating a large quantity of carbs.”

Rakul revealed to Health Shots that she avoids using the word diet, and in fact, finds it depressing.

“I don’t treat fitness as a fad, and it’s not something I follow just because I am an actor,” she told Times of India. “A healthy lifestyle is important for each one of us, irrespective of our profession. For me, it is as important as eating and breathing. A healthy lifestyle leads to a healthy mind, which is more productive. So, fitness makes me happy.”

Rakul told Health Shots that her diet involves a lot of veggies, revealing one of her favorite foods is Thai curry with rice. “When people hear I eat rice, they get really surprised. Yes, I eat rice for both lunch and dinner. It’s good carbs, and there’s a difference between good and bad carbs. You can eat chole bhature, not that I eat, but it can also be a part of a vegan diet,” she said.

“Any sort of lifestyle change happens only when you truly want it to happen when it’s something that you have decided for yourself,” she told Health Shots. “It’s somewhat of an experiment that you do on yourself, and if it works for you, you can continue doing it. Nobody can force you to leave meat. Nobody can force you to adapt to any lifestyle, and for that matter, work out or eat clean. It’s a calling and when you start seeing a difference in yourself is when you will want to do it.”

Rakul is a big fan of burning calories al fresco. “I love outdoor activities, be it trekking or cycling. I am an outdoor person; you can’t lock me in a room and say, ‘Let’s play some board games’. Outdoor activities energize me and also help me connect with a lot of things, spiritually,” she told Times of India.

Rakul maintains variety with exercise. “Lifting weights, doing high-intensity workouts, cycling, enjoying adventure sports… I do it all. I also practice yoga, which helps me achieve mind-body-soul balance,” she told Times of India.

“It’s sad that people don’t understand the importance of fitness and limit it to certain professions. They assume that it’s only for people who want to be thin. Unfortunately, being lean and having six-pack abs define fitness today. But, that doesn’t mean that one is healthy,” she told Times of India about her approach to fitness. “What’s important to me is my energy levels and how much strength I have. Strong is the new sexy. Everyone should be able to lift their own body weight, and every girl should be able to do at least a normal push-up. Good endurance is important, too.”
