Our favorite blue speedster is almost back for more adventures. Sonic the Hedgehog gave us a dose of film delight back in January 2020 with a delightfully sweet and bizarre story. Remember those days? It was back before the world turned upside down. In fact, this was one of the first and last films that some people saw in theaters before, well, you know what happened. (It’s me. I’m people.) And it was worth every dollar. Now Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is racing our way in 2022 and the trailer is a delight.
Of course, this film will pick back up where we left off. In case you forgot (and no one could blame you), Sonic sent Robotnik off to the mushroom planet to die, apparently. Sonic began his happily ever after with Tom and Maddie and the government agreed to pretend like none of this weirdness ever went down.
But, as we saw, Robotnik is in possession of a Sonic quill and trying to piece together a new craft. Why? First, one does not simply cast Jim Carrey in such an odd role and not bring him back. Second, a villain is not a true one unless he rises from the depths of oblivion for revenge. And that is what we see go down in the trailer.
We also get to see more of Tails, who made a brief debut at the end of the first film. And goodness, there’s Knuckles too. I will forever love the randomness of Idris Elba’s acting choices. It’s funny, it is cute, and we need April 8 to get here soon, please.
In addition to a Sonic the Hedgehog 2 trailer, there’s also this shiny new poster. Tails pilots while Sonic stands on top of the plane with his trademark facial expression. A determined scowl, I suppose. Robotnik creeps up in the background too. Insert fan screaming and intensifying anticipation here.
Given the a certain major US sporting event is on the horizon, and it’s one of the biggest days for advertisements, it’s only natural we get another short preview of the film. And this time our quippy hedgehog takes to the slopes with Knuckles at his heels.
Obviously, the short spot is fully of quippy Sonic goodness. But it does beg an important question: is Knuckles the Winter Soldier to Sonic’s Captain America? Certainly something to think about.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 debuts on April 8.
