Rocky Horror Picture Show to Get 50th Anniversary 4K Re-Release

For 50 years, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has asked fans young and old to give themselves over to absolute pleasure, and this summer, the legacy of Richard O’Brien’s classic cult musical movie will be celebrated accordingly. The Walt Disney Studios Restoration team has overseen a 4K Ultra HD restoration of the film, which will play theatrically this summer in honor of its original 1975 premiere before a Blu-ray release.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show was originally distributed by 20th Century Fox in the United States, and is thus now owned by the Mouse, following the 2019 acquisition of the legendary studio. (That’s right, Dr. Frank-n-Furter is a Disney Princess.) According to an official release, the new restoration took 10 months to complete, and “included a meticulous digital scan and preservation process that ensures every frame of the cult classic is presented with unprecedented clarity and vibrancy. The restoration also features a newly mixed Dolby Atmos audio track, bringing enhanced depth and dimension to the film’s iconic soundtrack.”

Additionally, “for purists and longtime fans, the original mono audio has been fully restored as well – allowing audiences to experience the film exactly as it was heard when it first premiered five decades ago.” There will also be a new logo to accompany the remastered version.
