We’re truly living in the golden era of beer innovation.

Consider the relatively recent history of the IPA.

15 years ago, the only mass-brewed IPAs on the market were hoppy, bitter West Coast IPAs or British-style IPAs, brewed with earthy English hops and malt from a centuries-old seafaring tradition.

Then small, local brewers did what brewers do best: Tinker away at perfecting their sudsy liquid art, in passionate pursuit of creating a beer that was new and wildly original.

Craft brewers like California’s Russian River (Pliney The Elder Double IPA), Vermont’s The Alchemist (Heady Topper), Lawson’s Finest Liquids (Sip of Sunshine), and Tree House Brewing (Julius) changed the beer game just a decade ago, pushing the boundaries of what an IPA could taste like.

The New England-style juicy IPA was born sometime around 2010 with the introduction of Citra hops. The term “juicy” entered the lexicon of craft beer nerds everywhere. This style is made for delicious sipping, with a sweet aroma and a delicate flavor that conjures up descriptors like “fruity, tropical, hazy” etc.

IPA styles have continued to evolve: Milkshake IPAs infused with fruit and lactose for a smooth, creamy flavor. Brut IPAs brewed with champagne yeast. Sour IPAs, with a unique tang. Session IPAs, with a lower ABV, usually under 5%.

New Belgium Brewing, one of America’s most popular craft breweries, embraced two unique IPA styles to brew a new beer for its Voodoo Ranger label: the high-octane Voodoo Ranger Juice Force IPA.

Like the name implies, it’s pretty much IPA jet fuel in a can – a true powerhouse of a beer.

Voodoo Ranger Juice Force IPA mergers Hazy and Imperial styles to form a strong yet drinkable 9.5% ABV beer. The flavor is tropical and slightly sweet, with hints of fruit, lots of juice, and low bitterness; appropriate for a beer brewed with Mexican orange, mango, and passion fruit. Like a great juicy, the beer is smooth, perfectly hopped with Chinook, Mosaic, Pahto, Galaxy, Lotus, Sabro, and Strata hops.

Six pack, 12 oz cans and single-serve 19.2oz cans of Juice Force IPA are now available nationwide.

According to the brand, it’s the hype around the beer has been remarkable.

“The feedback we’ve received on Juice Force so far has been nothing short of incredible,” said Dave Knospe, Voodoo Ranger Brand Manager explains in a press release. “Beer drinkers, retailers, and distributors are hitting us up daily demanding more. It’s well exceeded even our highest expectations.”

“When the brand team asked the brewing team to deliver a highly drinkable IPA at 9.5% ABV, I knew we were in for a challenge,” Dave Glor, New Belgium Brewer and Raw Materials Specialist, says in a statement.

“But after some initial trial and error, we delivered an absolutely fantastic powerhouse Hazy Imperial IPA that we aptly named Juice Force.”

Cheers to that. It’s truly a remarkable beer that pushes boundaries – a wonderful New Belgium Brewing tradition.
