LeVar Burton & Trevor Noah Joke About Will Smith’s Oscars Slap at Grammys

The Oscars slap got some attention from LeVar Burton as part of Sunday’s Grammys ceremony in Las Vegas

When presenting during the Grammys Premiere Ceremony, Burton told the audience, “I want to warn you all that our next presenter is a comedian, if you know what I mean.” From there, per the New York Post, he joked for everyone to “keep your hands to yourself.” From there, comedian Nate Bargatze made an appearance, complete with a helmet.

It’s now been exactly a week since King Richard star Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars following a G.I. Jane joke directed at Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith, who later apologized to the comedian in an extended statement shared to Instagram, later resigned from the Academy.

The slap was also addressed by returning Grammys host Trevor Noah, saying in his opening monologue that Sunday’s ceremony would see everyone “keeping people’s names out of our mouths.”

Later, Questlove also referenced the slap, jokingly advising fellow ceremony attendees to stay hundreds of feet away from him. The director of the Oscar-winning Summer of Soul documentary—who notably accepted his Oscar immediately following the slap—previously joked about the moment in a tweet on Friday. “Can we FINNNNNNNALY stop talking about it?” he said at the time.
