K.Flay has dropped her first track of 2024: ‘Carsick’.
Recorded during the sessions for ‘MONO’ – her exceptionally personal, guitar-driven album that arrived in September last year – the new tune was written and produced by K.Flay and frequent collaborator Jason Suwito.
It premiered today on Triple J radio in Australia where K.Flay will be touring in February, before heading to the US for dates throughout March.
‘Carsick’ arrives with a brand-new video, directed and edited by MILK Studios’ Sonny Alvarez – have a watch of it below.
Describing what the wild and whirring new track is about, K.Flay has shared:
“‘Carsick’ is about the moment you want to get off the ride. When the chaos isn’t fun anymore.
“I tried to capture both the dizzying feeling of being in a toxic relationship and the freedom that comes with leaving it.”
‘MONO’ might have been K.Flay’s fifth full-length album, but it represented a first since she began going deaf in her right ear at the end of August 2022 – a challenge that forced her into a sense of vulnerability and fear from which the album was penned.
Speaking to Rock Sound about the making of the album in our ‘The Album Story’ feature upon its release, K.Flay told us:
“The hearing loss was a catalyst for a musical rebirth. There’s a lot about my hearing that changed, and in a good way, it eroded my sense of expertise.”
“I’m always searching for art, music, literature, and podcasts that give me a sense of personal power.
“For me, the natural sonic expression of that is rock music. Because of my hearing, I wanted things to really feel and sound a certain way.”
She further outlined the process that went into the creation of ‘MONO’ via a mini-doc, ‘The Journey To MONO’ – check it out below.
