Washington’s House of Representatives has passed a landmark bill giving Beijing-based firm ByteDance six months to sell the social media site or see it blocked entirely.

It sparked calls for a similar ultimatum in the UK, with ex-Tory Minister Lord Bethell demanding the PM “prioritise our national security”.

Downing Street has already prohibited TikTok on government devices after concerns were raised about the safety of data.

Yesterday Mr Sunak’s spokesman said the app remained a “personal choice” for Brits but security boffins would “keep all these issues under review”.

He added: “Obviously it’s a matter for the US lawmakers in terms of the Bill today. For our part, ensuring the security of UK data is a priority for the government.

“Our experts will continue to monitor threats to our data and we will not hesitate to take action if necessary to protect our national security.”

Tory peer Lord Bethell yesterday supported American lawmakers taking steps to block Chinese state influence.

He said: “The lack of transparency and respect for normal business practices have led to questions about surveillance, influence and harmful algorithms.

“As a society, it’s time to address these concerns and prioritise our national security and safety of our children.”

TikTok’s chief executive Shou Zi Chou yesterday insisted data on its platform is “free from outside manipulation”.
