Canadian singer-songwriter Jade Bird first took the jagged little pill as a kid — yes, that Jagged Little Pill. It might have tasted bitter at the time, but ever since, her admiration for Alanis Morissette and her groundbreaking album has only grown. Listen to Bird chat about Morissette’s seminal 1995 record on this episode of The Spark Parade above or wherever you get your podcasts.

While Bird’s first introduction to Jagged Little Pill was as a child, it wasn’t until she began to embark on her own creative journey that the record’s power truly revealed itself. The more she listened, the more she was in awe of the album’s energetic songwriting, feminist themes, and confessional lyrics.

“She was somebody who wasn’t going quietly into the night, you know what I mean? It was vengeful and it was ugly and it was just so raw,” Bird gushes. “For me, that’s why it was just so inspiring. It was like, I don’t have to write pretty songs, I don’t have to be pretty when I sing; it can be guttural.”
