This renewal comes after the backlash and issues that plagued the talk show behind the scenes at the conclusion of its fourth season.

Season 4 originally launched after the SAG-AFTRA strike on October 16.

However, at that time it ended up airing without three writers who belonged to the Writer’s Guild of America.

They had declined the opportunity to return to their roles and were summarily replaced.

The talk show finds Drew chatting with a variety of celebrity guests.

Similarly to The Kelly Clarkson Show, Drew, 48, also shares personal news and thoughts on some of the topics discussed during each segment.

Fans and creatives alike as part of the WGA were unhappy with Drew during her Season 4 return.

She had decided to bring back her show during the entertainment industry writer’s strike in 2023.

After facing criticism for her decision, Drew posted a now-deleted apology video that did not sit well with anyone who viewed it.

She was labeled as being “out of touch” at the moment and accused of crossing the striking workers’ picket line.

Ultimately, Drew decided to pause the show’s premiere until the strike had ended.

“I have no words to express my deepest apologies to anyone I have hurt and, of course, to our incredible team who works on the show and has made it what it is today,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.

Now that Season 5 is on the horizon, it remains to be seen how fans will react to the show’s green light to return.

SHOW OF EMOTIONS

Previously, Drew bared her heart and feelings when hosting her talk show.

She had reconnected with someone from her past on Wednesday amid filming her talk show.

The actress walked from her on-stage couch to stand in front of the in-studio audience.

Producers had a crowd member stand up and share a story about how she and Drew were acquainted.

“I was your flight attendant four years ago, and here I am crying on your show now,” the woman told her.

She reminded Drew with tears in her eyes: “We sat in my galley, and you cried and cried because you were going through so much.”

The Charlie’s Angels star asked her acquaintance if she knew what she was going through at the time.

The flight attendant said that she did, adding that when they were on the plane together, Drew was “just bawling, and she was holding her.”

Following her statement, the Hollywood A-lister went to where she was sitting in the audience to hug her.

After Drew embraced the woman, she sat beside her to have a heart-to-heart, opening up to the entire room about her battle with alcoholism.

The interaction between Drew and the flight attendant was shared on the official Instagram account for the CBS program.

“Drew reunites with a flight attendant who comforted her after she quit drinking,” the post captioned.

FAN REACTIONS

Fans commented under the post how much the heartfelt moment resonated with them.

” I hear ya Drew when u stop drinking your life changes I’m in my 13th week and feeling and looking better,” one fan raved.

Another added: “This is why we love you! You’re a real person and not fake!”

A third person cosigned: “Yes yes yes!!! More of this please. I acknowledge you Drew for your courage and persistence and perseverance.

What a beautiful moment.”

Someone else agreed: “Love love love these kinds of stories. There are good people in the world!

This is all so open, so honest. Real life continues on for everyone.”

The Drew Barrymore Show’s fourth season premiere happened on Monday.

RECENT BACKLASH

Drew had actually begun production on the show before the Writers Guild of America strike ended last month.

She released in an announcement at the time that her show wouldn’t break any SAG-AFTRA strike rules – the organization has been protesting since July.

However, as a WGA rep explained to The Wrap in September, though the Scream actress didn’t violate SAG-AFTRA strike rules, she violated WGA’s strike rules by returning “without writers.”

Picketers protested the show on September 11.

Between the picketing and the online backlash, Drew appeared to feel compelled to respond to all of the chatter.

She took to social media on September 15 to share a heartfelt video of her apologizing to writers and union members for her choice to restart her show.

It wasn’t until September 17 that she announced she would halt production on her talk show until the WGA strike was handled.

“I have listened to everyone, and I am making the decision to pause the show’s premiere until the strike is over,” Drew said in an Instagram video.

“I have no words to express my deepest apologies to anyone I have hurt and, of course, to our incredible team who works on the show and has made it what it is today.

“We really tried to find our way forward. And I truly hope for a resolution for the entire industry soon.”
