A rare coin has flogged for a staggering amount of money online.

The winning bidder paid an eye-watering £161.78 for the 5p when it was put on offer on eBay.

It was sold after bidders spent seven days battling to get their hands on it.

When things kicked off, the offers began at 99p which means it was already going for around 20 times its face value.

But it managed to sell for even more as it flogged for a fortune a week later.

The design found on the rare coin is of a 1992 5p, which features the “Third Portrait” of the Queen on the obverse.

Another version was introduced into circulation in 2008, but the old-type coin are still legal tender.

The difference with this particular rare coin is that it doesn’t look quite as it should.

That’s because the 5p had been stuck on the wrong type of coin.

It was predicted to be a closer match to a Fiji cent, something you definitely wouldn’t find in the UK.

The eBay seller sad: “I feel this could be a 5p struck on a Fiji 1 cent blank.

“Based on weight, metallurgy, diameter, designer of portrait – it would be a close match.”

Now when it comes to a 50p coin, there are many designs out there which could be worth a lot of money.

Change Checker updates its scarcity index which looks at these figures and ranks coins every three months.

And if you’re worried you’d be sold a fake, experts at Coin Hunter or Royal Mint could help you see the difference.

The Kew Gardens 50p coin is one of the rarest out there.

Often bidders will try their absolute hardest to get their claws on one as they’re popular among collectors.
