It has been reported that Lego is looking to branch out after its exclusivity deal with Warner Bros. and TT Games expires, and has signed a new partnership with 2K to release several new titles over the next couple of years.

First reported by VGC, 2K will be overseeing the development of two new Lego games, one of which is a football/soccer Lego game that is due to release close to the World Cup later this year. This title will allegedly be developed by Sumo Digital of LittleBigPlanet fame and will be the start of a new line of Lego sports titles.

The second title in the report is allegedly going to be an open-world Lego racing game from WWE 2K22 developer Visual Concepts. While there is no pre-existing Lego football games, there was a little known franchise called Lego Racers which first released back in 1999. It’s possible that this new racing game could be a return to the series.

As for Lego’s current partnership with TT Games, VGC reports that Lego does not intend to extend its partnership beyond its expiry date, and will publish one more game with the developer after the launch of Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Reports of workplace abuse at TT Games and a slip in sales of recent Lego games have also reportedly had a hand in the split.

Lego’s decision to broaden its output of games is apparently due to the company putting more of an emphasis on the gaming side of its business. It’s very clear to see that Lego’s interest in the gaming industry has increased over the past couple of years, collaborating with publishers like Nintendo and games like Horizon Forbidden West to try and entice new customers.

Whatever the case, the only confirmed Lego game we know about right now is Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga which is set to release on April 5 later this year. The game will be available for PC, PS4, PS4, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch.
