On July 20-23, Great South Bay Music Festival returned to Shorefront Park in Patchogue, N.Y. The four-day event featured a mix of incredible performers, including Electric Hot Tuna, Dirty Heads, Phil Lesh & Friends and Govt. Mule.
Highlights from the opening day included “Tuff Enuff” during Fabulous Thunderbirds’ set, Dave Mason opening with “Only You Know and I Know.” Later in the evening, Hot Tuna closed the night with their final scheduled Electric appearance, opening with Jorma Kaukonen’s “Been So Long” into “Hesitation Blues.” Jack Casady then took over to drive an incredible version of “Bowlegged Woman, Knock Kneed Man” with thunderous bass lines and electric grins between bandmates. Notably, the set included Jefferson Airplane covers “Trial By Fire” and “Good Shepherd,” and they closed out the evening with “Funky #7.”
On Saturday, Great South Bay welcomed Phil Lesh & Friends, this time around, comprised of Phil Lesh, his son Grahame, Eric Krasno, Jennifer Hartswick and John Molo. Phil Lesh & Friends opened with “Shakedown Street,” then found their way into a cover of Smokey’s (and JGB’s) “Second That Emotion.” They kept the music flowing by opening the second set with “St. Stephen,” which also saw a romping “Mason’s Children.” They closed the night with a fitting “One More Saturday Night” encore.
