The 74th Berlin International Film Festival rolled out the red carpet yesterday for the opening film and the world premiere of Small Things Like These, directed by Tim Mielants starring Cillian Murphy, Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley and Emily Watson. 

The film is based on the book by the award-winning Irish writer Claire Keegan. It takes place over Christmas in 1985, when devoted father and coal merchant Bill Furlong (Murphy) discovers startling secrets kept by the convent in his town, along with some shocking truths of his own.

Today, The stars of Cuckoo, including Hunter Schafer, Dan Stevens, Jessica Henwick and Director Tilman Singers attended the premiere. The film follows Gretchen (Hunter Schafer), who travels to the German Alps with her parents and comes across dark secrets. She experiences visions of a woman chasing her, leading her into a conspiracy that involves experiments by the resort’s owner, echoing back through generations

Rooney Mara walked the carpet at the premiere of La Cocina directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios starring Raúl Briones Carmona, Anna Diaz, Motell Foster and Oded Fehr. La Cocina is described as a tragic and comic tribute to the invisible people who prepare our food.

Today’s red carpet screenings featured A Different Man, starring Renate Reinsve, Adam Pearson, and Sebastian Stan, as well as Keyke Mahboobe Man (My Favourite Cake).

Highlights of the 2024 lineup include La Cocina, directed by Alonso Ruiz Palacios and starring Rooney Mara;  A Traveler’s Needs, starring Isabelle Huppert; Seven Veils, starring Amanda Seyfried; and director Alice Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding, written by Weronika Tofilska and stars Kristen Stewart.

Lupita Nyong’o heads the International Jury alongside Ann Hui, Christian Petzold, Albert Serra, Jasmine Trinca and Oksana Zabuzhko. The Encounters Jury, Lisandro Alonso, Denis Côté and Tizza Covi will select the winners for Best Film, Best Director and the Special Jury Award.

20 films are competing for the awards in this year’s Competition and winners will be announced at the Berlinale Palast on February 24.
