Tracy Chapman to Duet "Fast Car" with Luke Combs at Grammys

Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at this Sunday’s Grammy Awards, where she will perform a duet of her 1988 classic “Fast Car” with Luke Combs, according to a new report in Variety.

Combs had already been announced as a performer for the 2024 Grammys, but Chapman’s appearance would be a welcome surprise. Per Variety, she has only performed on camera three times since 2009.

Last year, Combs released a cover of “Fast Car” which has landed him a Grammy nomination for Best Country Solo Performance. It surpassed the original’s peak position on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually reached No. 2 on that chart.

As a result of its success, Chapman became the first Black woman to have the sole songwriting credit on a No. 1 country hit. She later called it an honor and expressed gratitude for the song reaching new fans.

The “Fast Car” cover was also honored as Song of the Year at the CMAs, though Chapman wasn’t able to make the ceremony. “It’s truly an honor for my song to be newly recognized after 35 years of its debut,” she said in a statement. “Thank you to the CMAs and a special thanks to Luke and all of the fans of ‘Fast Car.’”
