Now that the FX series Atlanta is over, the death of Childish Gambino has been greatly exaggerated. Donald Glover says he may step into the persona to release new music soon.

Speaking in an interview with E!’s Laverne Cox at the Golden Globes, Glover says he’s been back in the recording studio. “I’m making music right now; I love it,” Donald Glover told the outlet. “I’m actually working; I’m in the studio. I’ve been bringing people in, like secret people, working on little things. But I’ve just been making it for fun right now. But soon, something will happen, I promise. Something will happen.”

Laverne Cox clarified by asking Glover if his new music would be released under the Childish Gambino moniker.

Glover previously announced in 2017 that he would retire the use of the name. He announced during his Governors Ball performance that year that the follow-up to his Awaken, My Love! would be his final album under the moniker. By that suggestion, the 2020 LP 3.15.20 should have been the final Childish Gambino work. “So we’re putting that rumor to rest, honey,” Cox asked Glover. “Yeah, you don’t have to worry about that,” Glover answered

Donald Glover will be reuniting with the Community cast for the upcoming movie, which is shooting in June. Most of the original cast will return for the sequel. It will air on Peacock, with Harmon confirming he wouldn’t press forward without Glover on board. In an interview with Variety, Harmon confirmed, “For lack of a better word, there was a ball fumbled, [Glover] is down to clown. Man, I would not want to think about making [the movie] without Donald.”

Donald Glover fans are in for a treat if the Community movie and new music from Childish Gambino are in the cards for 2023. We’ll have to stay tuned to see what drops, but Glover did do a “Redbone” duet with Billie Eilish on stage–so who knows.
