Spotify and Netflix are exploring the intersection of streaming, gaming, and pop culture with their respective promotional tie-ins for Happy Gilmore 2.
To mark the occasion, Spotify has launched the Happy Gilmore 2 Tournament—a mini-golf game embedded directly within the Spotify app. This new venture represents Spotify’s first foray into in-app gaming and coincides with the film’s premiere on Netflix.
Whether Spotify is planning an expansion into gaming is anyone’s guess, though the platform has been blobbing into podcasts, audiobooks, and even concert tickets over the past few years.
The Happy Gilmore 2 Tournament offers fans a way to interact with the world of Happy Gilmore before and after viewing the film. Users participate by tilting their phones to take golf swings, progressing through three film-inspired virtual holes. Audio clips and movie easter eggs, like Happy’s boots and his distinctive hockey stick, are sprinkled throughout—mirroring the irreverent tone of the original and new films.
After each round, players are rewarded with a custom playlist of ‘happy’ themed tracks tailored by Spotify, blending music and gameplay for a unique engagement experience. Simultaneously, Netflix has launched its own easter egg video game tie-in called Happy Gilmore: Golf Mayhem ‘98 Demo. Netflix subscribers can check out the throwback game riffs on 90s golf titles that includes quickly challenges that pay homage to the film’s story beats.
Happy Gilmore 2 does not skimp on musical star power or notable cameos. The film’s soundtrack draws on favorites from the first movie and adds a slate of iconic tracks spanning classic rock, 80s pop, and hip-hop—including contributions from House of Pain, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Muse, and Survivor. In addition, the movie’s cast is peppered with appearances from musical luminaries including Eminem, who steps in as a hat-wearing heckler, and Post Malone, who appears as DJ Omar Gosh.
Other celebrity and music industry cameos include Bad Bunny (Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio), Kid Cudi (Scott Mescudi), and a parade of public figures from the sports, broadcasting, and online entertainment scenes. This mix of old friends, new faces, and musical legends underscores the film’s celebratory approach to sports, comedy, and culture.
