Marvel Resurrecting SI Swimsuit 'Parody' Comic In July

Marvel

The Marvel Swimsuit Special comic, a “parody” (more on that later) of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, is being resurrected for the first time in 30 years. According to the media powerhouse, a new issue of the Marvel Swimsuit Special will be released in July.

In the official announcement, Marvel confirmed the comic will will feature an overarching story written by Tim Seeley and Tony Fleecs, with art by Nick Bradshaw, Nic Klein, Marguerite Sauvage, Luciano Vecchio, and more.

In addition to the comic book run, skins of these characters will also be added to the popular third-person hero shooter video game Marvel Rivals, which was released last year.

Check out the first official promotion image for the Marvel Swimsuit Special, featuring Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Wasp (Janet Van Dyne),  She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters), Mary Jane Watson, Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) below — to be clear, these are comic book versions of the characters and not the likenesses  of the actresses who play them.

“Throughout the ’90s, fans enjoyed a lighter side of the Marvel Universe in Marvel Swimsuit Special, an annual one-shot that featured breathtaking artwork of Marvel characters in beach attire and swimwear. This unique and beloved special makes its long-demanded return this July in MARVEL SWIMSUIT SPECIAL: FRIENDS, FOES & RIVALS #1!” Marvel announced earlier this week.

“Primarily an artist showcase, Marvel Swimsuit Special presented pinups from the industry’s top talents in a magazine-style format, complete with tongue-in-cheek articles and descriptions. Each year, a light-hearted plot brought the heroes to a different setting, from the jungles of the Savage Land to the shores of Monster Island.”

The reason that I put “parody” in quotations is I find it to be a simply hilarious cover-up for what I believe it actually is: a chance to draw comic book characters looking hot. This is a major bonk situation. And guess what — that’s fine! People are into all sorts of things, much of them far weirder than comic book characters.

That said calling the art in these comics a parody is akin to asking a woman to go skinny dipping with you because it’s a fun prank. Like, okay, sure, THAT’S why you wanna do it.

MARVEL SWIMSUIT SPECIAL: FRIENDS, FOES & RIVALS #1 will go on sale on July 9.
