- James Gunn’s Peacemaker became a massive hit for HBO Max.
- The John Cena-starring superhero show racked up the biggest single-day performance in HBO Max history.
- The show also boasts an instantly beloved opening sequence, which has since been recreated with Legos.
Gotta admit: I was way off when it came to my prediction for how Peacemaker would fair. Granted, while director James Gunn has yet to put out a bad product, particularly when it comes to the superhero genre — Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and The Suicide Squad are all above-average if not great comic book movies — I just thought that Peacemaker was far too niche of a character to really make a mark.
And how wrong I was, because according to Gunn himself, the season one finale of Peacemakerset a single-day viewership record for HBO Max:
F#CK YEAH!! Peacemaker finale had the biggest single day performance for a Max Original series ever and finale viewing was up 44% over premiere. Thanks to all the fans who kept showing up more and more every week this season. @HboMax @DCpeacemaker pic.twitter.com/pp8c9JGuGl

In addition to John Cena’s surprisingly layered performance as the oblivious alpha anti-hero, what makes Peacemaker such a joy is that it’s imbued with Gunn’s traditional quirkiness, a quality that is evident as soon as every episode kicks off thanks to its electric opening credits.
Since Peacemaker has become such a hit — HBO Max has already announced a second season — fans of the show, such as YouTuber Brick Cucumber (great name, Brick) are now using their creativity to express their love for it. And what better way to show your appreciation for something than meticulously recreating it with (digitally animated) Legos.
The edit even caught the attention of series creator, writer, producer, and director James Gunn, who will be returning to helm a second season of the hit HBO Max superhero series:
In addition to John Cena, Peacemaker also stars Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Chukwudi Iwuji, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick. The first eight episodes of the series are currently streaming on HBO Max.
