Noted WWE fan Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio aka Bad Bunny is set to star as El Muerto in an upcoming standalone Spider-Man spin-off Marvel movie from Sony, Deadline reports.
According to Marvel.com, El Muerto/Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez is a wrestler with superpowers that were passed down from his family through a mask. The movie will mark the first live-action Marvel film with a lead Latino superhero.
The news was announced Monday during CinemaCon’s Sony Panel at The Forum at Caesars Palace and featured an appearance from Bad Bunny himself. “This opportunity to bring El Muerto to life, it’s amazing. It’s incredible,” Bad Bunny said during the panel, per IndieWire. “I love wrestling, I grew up watching wrestling and now I’m a wrestler … I think it’s the perfect role for me. It will be epic, I’m sure.”
El Muerto is scheduled to arrive in theaters on January 12, 2024.
In other wrestling-related news, Bad Bunny made his WrestleMania debut last year and received praise from WWE icons The Undertaker and Triple H.
“@sanbenito dedicated the time, effort, and passion necessary for a world tour into his performance at #WrestleMania,” Triple H tweeted back in May. “He’s not only a lifelong fan of our business but a member of our @WWE family who earned all of our respect along the way!!!!!”
On the acting side of things, Bad Bunny previously appeared in Narcos: Mexico and will also show up in the action comedy film Bullet Train, which will be released later this summer on July 29. Bullet Train also stars Brad Pitt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Andrew Koji, Sandra Bullock, Hiroyuki Sanada, Zazie Beetz, and others.
