Robot attends high school ceremony and receives very own certificate

Robot shaking a teacher's hand

A humanoid robot named Shuang Shuang walked across a high school graduation stage in China, shook hands with a teacher, accepted a certificate, and posed for photos.

According to reports from New York Post, the ceremony took place at Shuangshi High School in Fujian Province, China, on July 1. Footage of the event quickly went viral after circulating on Chinese social media, with local outlets saying the robot’s appearance was symbolic, highlighting Fujian’s push in the country’s booming robotics industry.

Both students and staff can be seen cheering as the honorary student accepts their certificate from the teacher, before turning to the crowd, much to the delight of the school’s students.

While little is known about the robot’s technical specs, it appeared to walk the stage autonomously and complete the sequence without direct human control.

This isn’t the first time China has made headlines for integrating robotics into real-world events. On June 28, 2025, Beijing hosted the world’s first fully autonomous robot football match, where six AI-powered humanoid robots faced off in a 3v3 soccer game with no human control.

The event drew international attention as attendees applauded the chaos of falling bots, off-target goals, and even a robot being stretchered off after a collision. Interestingly, these robots were powered by real-time algorithms and physical sensors, which allowed them to pass, defend goals, and run (well, stumble) around the field entirely on their own.

It’s part of a wider trend in China, where robots aren’t just factory tools – instead, they’re being integrated into everyday life. From delivery robots to self-driving cars, it’s clear that AI like Shuang Shuang is not just a gimmick.

So, who knows, maybe one day human students will be graduating alongside robots?
