Stark divides between good and evil are for babies. Here in the age of prestige dramas and gritty reboots, complexity is king, and no one is more complicated than an antihero. In fact, give us a character who is unimpeachably good, and we’ll just smoosh our faces into the screen trying to break through so we can slap away their stupid little smiles. Bad guys are just more fun to watch, and no appeal to morality is going to change that.
Redditor elesilfat, for one, has had enough. “I’m tired of movies where there’s one cool character and you’re just the plain person supporting the cool one and hating the bad,” they recently told r/Movies. “For instance, The Departed (2006) is a great example where you’re not sure whom to root for… or maybe The Devil’s Advocate (1997).”
They then asked, “What’s a top movie where the main character is bad, but you still root for them?” and Reddit turned off its conscience long enough to have a rollicking good time.
