Bring Me the Horizon on "Strangers," Musical Evolution & Sempiternal Memories

Bring Me the Horizon are wrapping up a headlining US tour before playing the When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas. The UK act recently rocked the Louder Than Life fest in Louisville, Kentucky, where Heavy Consequence caught up with singer Oli Sykes and drummer Mat Nicholls to discuss their fall tour, their latest single “Strangers,” their musical evolution, and their memories of the band’s seminal 2013 album Sempiternal.

“Strangers” offers a preview of the BMTH’s second Post Human EP, and has rocketed up the current US mainstream rock chart. In the video interview above, Sykes told us of the single and the upcoming EP, “The whole theme of the [first Post Human] record was about what was going on with the pandemic, with us looking toward the future with a bit of uncertainty, doubt and fear. … This next record is very much about recovery.”

He continued, “As we were recovering as a society, I also went through a lot of personal stuff and had to recover in my own way. … This song is very much about rehab and kicking drug addiction … the song is basically addressing the fact that sometimes we think we’re healed but actually we’re just distracted … and realizing I have a long way to go on my path to recovery.”

With next year marking the 10th anniversary of Bring Me the Horizon’s acclaimed Sempiternal album, Nicholls reflected on the importance of the LP in terms of the band’s career.

“People [in the band] were going through personal things; Oli came out of rehab, and I think we just saw it as a bit of a fresh start,” the drummer said. “It’s my favorite record we’ve ever done. … We went through a lot of shit, but we came out the other side so much better as people.”
