The version of Johnny Storm/Human Torch that we see in this summer’s The Fantastic Four: First Step won’t be “your Daddy’s” Johnny Storm, according to actor Joseph Quinn. Quinn, who broke out in the fourth season of Stranger Things a few years back, will be playing the iconic founding Marvel superhero in the MCU in the years to come.
During a recent interview, Joseph Quinn — fresh off a stand-out performance in Alex Garland’s Warfare and co-leading A Quiet Place: Part One last summer — said that he and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige discussed how the character of Johnny Storm , particularly his early branding as a “womanizer”, would play in modern times, with them ultimately deciding that isn’t “sexy” these days.
Quinn will be starring in The Fantastic Four: First Steps alongside Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and Ebon Mosss-Barchrach when it hits movies theaters on July 25.
“He’s a man that leads with a lot of bravado, which can be an affront sometimes. But also he’s funny. Myself and [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin [Feige] were speaking about previous iterations of him and where we are culturally. He was branded as this womanizing, devil-may-care guy, but is that sexy these days? I don’t think so,” Quinn told Entertainment Weekly.
In addition to Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, The Fantastic Four: First Steps stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Incredible, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Ralph Ineson as Galactus, and Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer. Additional cast members include Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps — helmed by Matt Shakman, a television director known for his work on projects such as WandaVision, The Great, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Fargo and Game of Thrones — will be released in movie theaters in the United States on July 25, 2025. Check out the first official trailer and synopsis for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, via Marvel Studios, below.
“Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel’s First Family as they face their most daunting challenge yet. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer. And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.”
