Apologies for the gatekeeping here but y’all read the headline, this article is for millennials only. The rest of you will just have to leave now because this is ours. The clip below is just, perfect. It’s ‘Kevin’ from American Pie belting out American Pie-related lyrics to Bowling For Soup’s ‘1985.’

This video comes from the recent ‘Summer Of ’99 And Beyond’ cruise which ran last week from Miami to Nassau in The Bahamas. The nostalgic music cruise was headlined by the one and only Creed as well as Sevendust, Hoobastank, Lit, Alien Ant Farm, Fuel, and more. Of course, there were side acts.

American Pie hit theaters on July 9th in 1999. I remember seeing in the theaters sitting in front of my best friend’s parents because we were way too young to buy tickets to that Rated-R film ourselves but old enough to convince our parents that we could see it. This irreverent coming-of-age comedy hit millennials like a bat out of hell and for that we will always be thankful.

Here is Kevin from American Pie throwing it all back with his own lyrics to this Pop Punk anthem:

When that movie dropped we (elder millennials) were pre-Y2K, pre-9/11, just starting out high school or finishing up middle school. AOL was still our primary means of accessing the Internet and it was god awfully slow. Heck, MySpace wouldn’t even be invented for another 4 years. The world was our oyster. All we had were coming-of-age comedies like American Pie and the many films to follow to sit around and quote at each other while getting into trouble. It was the glory days.

Also, I never knew that Thomas Ian Nicholas could play guitar or sing but that should come as no surprise. Among the teen actors on the 1999 films he was arguably the most accomplished at the time having already starred in 1993’s Rookie of the Year as Henry Rowenartner. Mena Suvari wouldn’t be featured in American Beauty until 5 months after American Pie came out….

Thomas Ian Nicholas indeed slayed that song. And as it turns out, this is definitely not the first time he has sang it. Here he is 5 months ago singing the American Pie version of ‘1985’ with Bowling For Soup:

I’m not ashamed to admit that I go down nostalgic Emo/Pop Punk music rabbit holes every couple of months. Somehow, Bowling For Soup’s ‘1985’ always ends up on my end-of-year Spotify Wrapped as one of my most played songs. It just hits right…. For any millennials out there that need a refresher:

The Summer of ’99 And Beyond Cruise for 2026 has already been announced for those that might be interested. Creed will once again headline and they’ll be supported by 3 Doors Down, Collective Soul, Living Colour, Filter, and more.

P.s., can someone rip that Kevin from American Pie version of ‘1985’ and throw it on SoundCloud so we can listen to it on the regular?
