Heard of the PlayStation? Yeah, it’s a great console and all, but what if it was… crab shaped? YouTuber GingerOfOz took inspiration from a drawing of the original 1994 console and decided to make a ‘Playstacean’ that’s fully functional. Spoiler alert: It’s adorable.
GingerOfOz is no stranger to console conversions like this, with him often turning full game consoles into handhelds that can be taken on the go just for the fun of it (lthough, he sometimes opens commissions for those who want their own mods.)
He saw a drawing from artist Anh Dang of a ‘Playstacean’, a clever play on words that turned the OG console into a crab, complete with controller-shaped hands.
Ginger saw this and considered it a challenge. So, he set out to create an actual, functioning version of it to bring Dang’s concept to life. And, though it took a ton of attempts to make it happen, he ultimately pulled it off.
YouTuber turns PlayStation into ‘Playstacean’
It isn’t like Ginger took his PlayStation 1 (technically PlayStation One, a smaller and more compact version of the console) and just stuck some crab arms on it.
No, he completely ripped his console apart, trimmed the motherboard down, and created completely custom parts for every part of it. Building a version of Dang’s concept that was true to the original art while being functional was a challenge.
He was forced to create and assemble 56 parts, 40 of which were unique and modeled by Ginger, to get this creation working. This included custom soldering to get all the wiring to work with the controllers.
However, he was able to get it done in the end.
The console was fully playable, though the YouTuber claimed that its controller arms weren’t exactly comfortable to use. The shoulder buttons especially look like a pain, as they’re sticking out of the side of the arms rather than being on the back of it like a normal DualShock controller. Most pads are designed for your fingers to curl around the shoulder buttons for a reason.
That said, GingerOfOz claimed he’s so happy with how this console looks that he’s not even sad about it not having the most user-friendly layout.
“All of those gripes are so overwhelmingly crushed by the joy I receive just from looking at this guy. He’s been closed up for a while now, and yet, even as I plan this video, I find myself turning to admire him every so often.”
