Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, the composer who has created the theme songs for the hit HBO series The White Lotus, has revealed he will not be returning for Season 4. Tapia de Veer will not be returning due to a disagreement with writer and director Mike White.
The theme song for The White Lotus’ first and second season featured a viral melody which Tapia de Veer refers to as “ooh-loo-loo-loo”. The below video has been queued up to begin at the “ooh-loo-loo-loo” melody that had become synonymous with The White Lotus but is missing from the season three theme song.
Speaking to The New York Times, Tapia de Veer revealed he would not be returning for the fourth season of the acclaimed HBO series due to creative disputes with writer/director Mike White and HBO producers.
“He described creative disagreements with the show’s creator and director, Mike White, that began during Season 1. Conversations with producers could be ‘hysterical,’ Mr. Tapia de Veer said, and the show’s creative team repeatedly requested music that was more upbeat and less experimental than the work Mr. Tapia de Veer wanted to produce.”
“And about that eerie Season 3 theme? Mr. Tapia de Veer loves it, but had hoped the season would include a longer version that builds into the more recognizable melody from the Season 1 and Season 2.” [via The New York Times]
Tapia de Veer also released the full version of the season three theme song that he created. While the only ultimately used by HBO cuts off about half way through, de Veer’s full version has the famous beat-drop that was featured in both season 1 and 2.
The White Lotus has become a massive hit for HBO, with its most recent episode — its penultimate of season three — pulling in the highest viewership in the history of the series.
