Wendy’s has made a lot of changes to its menu since the first location gave customers a grand total of five items to choose from when it opened in 1969, but there’s one staple that’s largely remained the same: the Frosty. However, it sounds like it’s about to get a fairly drastic makeover based on a leaked memo outlining a pretty compelling update.
It’s been more than 55 years since Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy’s in Columbus, Ohio, and customers who headed to the restaurant he named after his daughter initially had a fairly limited number of options to pick from.
The burger joint offered some classics in the form of sandwiches boasting its signature square patties in addition to fries and soft drinks. It supplemented those usual suspects with two slightly less conventional items in the form of a bowl of chili and the Frosty, the not-quite-a-milkshake that remains one of its most popular offerings.
The original Frosty was a mix of chocolate and vanilla ice cream, which remained the only option until the latter was offered as a standalone for the first time in 2006. In recent years, the chain has been a bit more eager to switch things up, as strawberry, peppermint, pumpkin spice, orange dreamsicle, triple berry, pineapple, and salted caramel have also been offered as flavors in place of vanilla for a limited time.
Wendy’s recently unveiled its newest Frosty innovation after teaming up with the Girl Scouts for a Thin Mint variation that features a “minty cookie crumble sauce” swirled into the frozen concoction. It would appear that’s a glimpse at bigger things to come, as a couple of fast food insiders got their hands on a memo outlining a fairly revolutionary change that’s set to hit the menu later this year.
The news comes courtesy of the culinary aficionados behind the Instagram accounts snachwithzach and sodaseekers, who obtained an internal document concerning the impending launch of Frosty Swirls and Frosty Fusions.
The Swirls will allow you to add a caramel, strawberry, or brownie batter, well, swirl into your Frosty as of April 15, and the Fusions (which will launch on May 12th) will let you upgrade even more with the addition of “various sweet treats.”
It would appear that second option is spiritually similar to the likes of a McFlurry and a Dairy Queen Blizzard, and I’d be lying if I said I’m not pretty intrigued by both.
