FX’s Welcome to Wrexham has unveiled its’ Rocky-influenced trailer for Season 3 of the documentary series, which premieres on May 2nd.
As the show’s creators and stars — Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney — put it, the Welcome to Wrexham journey so far has been a lot like the Rocky series. “In Rocky 1, he loses. In Season 1, we lost,” McElhenney says in the trailer. “In Rocky 2, he wins — in Season 2, we won. And now, here we are in Season 3.” Reynolds then chimes in: “It’s going to be a very harrowing, edge-of-your-seat season.” Fittingly, the trailer is soundtracked by none other than Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.”
Now in the fourth tier of English football (which is called League Two, for bizarre reasons), Wrexham AFC have achieved their toughest goal by getting out of the National League. The pressure is on, however, to not get relegated back into the fifth tier. Meanwhile, if all goes well, Wrexham could secure a back-to-back promotion to League One (The third tier of the pyramid). They’ll have their challenges — the trailer depicts star player Paul Mullin suffering an injury, for example — but as always with Wrexham, they’ll have unwavering support from their legion of fans in Wales and beyond.
Season 3 of Wrexham will follow Season 2 by putting a bigger spotlight on Wrexham’s women’s team, who now have a leg up playing in the Welsh Adran Premier League after an undefeated run last season. Throughout the show, we’ll be given bigger glimpses of both the men’s and women’s teams, the town of Wrexham, and, of course, co-owners Rob and Ryan’s quest to keep the club’s ambitions alive. Up the town, and watch the Season 3 trailer below.
Season 2 of Welcome to Wrexham premiered last fall — in our review, we named the season as an “even more expansive portrait of Wrexham, Sports, and Ambition.”
