Beloved 1990s video game franchise Backyard Sports is being officially rebooted.
On Tuesday, August 20, Playground Productions announced the return of the iconic video game franchise, Backyard Sports, which will be released in the coming months.
According to Playground Productions, the relaunch of Backyard Sports will be across multiple verticals, such as video games, film, television, merch, and more.
While it’s currently unclear which titles under the Backyard Sports umbrella will be returning, its parent company said in its official statement that they’re “bringing the popular games back,” suggesting that multiple will be released.

“Backyard Sports is more than just a game; it’s a cherished part of childhood for millions of people,” Lindsay Barnett, Founder and CEO of Playground Productions, said in a statement accompanying the announcement.
“I look at media as the largest classroom in the world. As such, our goal is to produce meaningful content that not only entertains but also educates and inspires. The return of Backyard Sports is the perfect embodiment of that goal.”
Backyard Sports famously rendered children versions of famous athletes such as Albert Pujols, Paul Pierce, Barry Bonds, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Tom Brady, David Ortiz, and more. These updated versions will likely do the same with modern athletes.
“We’re incredibly excited to reintroduce Backyard Sports to a new generation of players,” said Chris Waters, Chief Product Officer at Playground Productions.
“We’re taking great care to preserve the look and feel that made the original games so special while updating them with modern features and gameplay that today’s audience expects. I can’t wait for fans to see what we’re building on the Playground.”
The reboot of Backyard Sports does not have an official release date. Playground Productions says it will be released in the “coming months”, however, which suggests the rollout will begin before the end of the year.
