Tristan Thompson is now the legal guardian of his brother, Amari Thompson.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, the court granted the former boyfriend of Khloe Kardashian the authority to provide care and make medical decisions for Amari.

The court found that Tristan provided “sufficient evidence” to grant him guardianship powers over his special needs brother.

To that end, the professional basketball player now has “powers of the estate,” allowing him to effectively manage Amari’s finances and assets.

Notably, he was granted no additional powers, with the court saying that the Canadian-American needs to put up a $114,858 bond. He is also expected to submit a list of everything he is in charge of by Sunday, May 26, 2024.

If there are things that are not cash on the list, a Probate Referee, authorized by the state controller, will figure out how much they are worth. Additionally, the court determined that Amari was born in Canada and is a citizen of Canada.

The legal filing noted it was impossible to reunite Amari with one parent due to neglect and abandonment under California law. Furthermore, the documents claim that it is not in Amari’s best interest to return to his parents’ previous country of nationality — Canada.

Amari lived with his mom, Andrea Brooks, until she died unexpectedly in January 2023. Following her death, Tristan filed a guardianship petition, citing that “Amari has been in the custody of (Tristan) and he has been providing care, maintenance, and support to Amari.”

In the filing, the 32-year-old accused his brother’s father, Trevor Thompson, of being a deadbeat, writing that he “has actively been absent from Amari’s life since Andrea Brooks received sole custody of Amari and a support order against Trevor Thompson in July of 2014.”

He then added that Trevor “has never fulfilled any of his support obligations towards Amari and has been actively avoiding them” before detailing that the patriarch “has effectively abandoned the proposed ward; he failed to pay any child support despite the court order and has not been in contact with the proposed ward or Andrea Marie Brooks since July 2014.”

Tristan further alleged that Trevor has not done anything to help or raise Amari since his mother died and had effectively given up all rights to have a say in the minor’s care.

Amid the good news for the Thompson brothers, it is worth noting that the Court would not have ruled in Tristan’s favor if the Department of Children and Family Services [DCFS] in Los Angeles had found errors during their investigation.

Even though the investigation records are sealed due to Amari being a minor, we reported in October that CPS had filed a report on its findings.

Tristan Owed $225,000 Child Support To Ex

The news about Tristan’s guardianship case comes after he was accused of owing his first child’s mother, Jordan Craig, nearly $225,000 in child support.

Craig, who has a son named Prince with Tristan, filed a petition in September 2023 asking the court to tell the Cleveland Cavaliers to stop giving him his salary until he pays his debt in full.

Tristan was ordered in April 2019 to pay Craig $40,000 every month until their son turns 18, which is typical in child support cases. However, the mother-of-one claimed that her baby daddy began missing payments in November 2022 when he only paid half the amount.

He paid the whole amount the following month, but in January 2023, he allegedly did not pay anything. From February 2023 to August 2023, he made partial payments, with the highest being $29,000 in August 2023.

In total, over nine months, Tristan paid only $136,000 in child support, leaving $224,000 unpaid. In her filing, Craig stated that the Court issued a WRIT of Execution for child support arrears of $232,763.97, but it has had no effect.

With the father of four signing a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in September, Craig believes it is time for him to pay off his debt.
