The THUNDERBOLTS* Got Their Very Own Wheaties Box (And Fans Immediately Ate It Up)

David Harbour’s Red Guardian has big dreams for his new band of superheroes in Thunderbolts*. The film’s Super Bowl trailer features the character saying, “This has makings of team that can raise to glory. Bring light from the darkness. This team can be the heroes on the Wheaties box!” Is he right? The movie didn’t even have to debut in theaters for us to learn he is. Marvel Studios and General Mills partnered to put the MCU’s newest group on a special box of that iconic cereal. And people ate it up immediately even though it doesn’t come with any food.

“The Breakfast of Champions” became “The Breakfast of Thunderbolts*.” Well, at least it did in spirit. Wheaties released a new special collector’s cereal box adorned with Marvel Studios’ new antihero squad. The $20 limited-edition box also features a Wheaties-style Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* logo. What it doesn’t include is any food. There’s no cereal inside. This for display only, not eating. (Unless you eat cardboard.)

“For more than a century, Wheaties has celebrated greatness across sports, culture and entertainment,” said KC Glaser, Senior Brand Experience Manager at General Mills, in a press release. “Teaming up with Marvel Studios for Thunderbolts* allows us to embrace a new kind of champion — one that defies expectations. This limited-edition release is designed for both Super Hero fans and cereal lovers alike, offering a unique way to celebrate the arrival of Marvel Studios’ most unconventional team.”

Just 1,000 boxes of this highly limited-edition collector’s Thunderbolts* item went on sale at Wheaties.com, where customers had the option of getting theirs either with or without a protective acrylic case. They didn’t last long, though. They sold out almost immediately.

Did Red Guardian buy all 1,000 boxes? Each customer, even Soviet super soldiers, was limited to just purchasing one box each, so at least 999 other people also got one.
