Tom Sturridge as Dream in episode one of Netflix's The Sandman

Netflix’s “The Sandman” may have just premiered on Aug. 5, but the 10-episode dark fantasy drama is already looking ahead in anticipation of a season two renewal. The streaming giant has yet to reveal if the screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s DC comic book series will return for another season, but the author and “Sandman” cocreator Allan Heinberg recently told Entertainment Tonight that they’re already making plans if and when Netflix gives them the green light.

“We’re laying the groundwork in case we are asked to make one,” said Heinberg. Gaiman added: “We would love there to be a season two . . . Right now, I love ‘Sandman,’ Allan loves ‘Sandman’ [and cocreator] David Goyer loves ‘Sandman.’ We know the cast loves ‘Sandman’ because they’ve seen it . . . Now, we need to see if that applies to the rest of the world or if it’s just us.”

“The Sandman” — which stars Tom Sturridge, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Jenna Coleman, and Gwendoline Christie — is based on the 75-issue comics Gaiman published from 1989 to 1996 — which chronicle the story of Morpheus (Sturridge), aka Dream, and his quest to restore his Dreaming realm. Sturridge is hopeful that viewers will love “The Sandman” enough to warrant a second season, and if confirmed, the actor told Entertainment Tonight that he’d prefer there to be less fighting. “Of course, [getting renewed] would be a delight,” he added. “Who knows what they all have in mind? But what we first hope is that it builds an audience and that people really get pleasure from it, and I think they will because it’s unlike anything anyone’s seen before.”

“The Sandman” season one is now streaming on Netflix.
