As a result of Kanye West’s recent antisemitic rhetoric, reports indicate that the basketball team at his Donda Academy in California is hemorrhaging talent as a handful of top players have left the school.
Kanye West’s Donda Academy basketball team is in free fall as a result of his antisemitic rhetoric, top players have been leaving the team
Dorell Wright, presiding over the most beleaguered prep basketball team in the country, stood inside a training facility Thursday and stared at his phone, as if willing the arrival of good news.
After Ye’s recent antisemitic comments on social media, Adidas, Gap and the talent agency CAA, among others, cut ties with the rapper. But Ye’s basketball team remains, although it has lost several key players. On Thursday morning, the team’s top player officially transferred. The departures aren’t limited to the team’s top players, though, as their “third-best player” and two backup players have also left the team after four major high school basketball tournaments disinvited the Donda Academy as a result of Kanye West’s recent antisemitic rhetoric.
West’s recent antisemitic rhetoric has also taken a toll on his career, as he’s been dropped by his agency CAA, and brands such as Balenciaga and Adidas. Getting dropped by Adidas was a particular blow to West, as Forbes reported that losing his Adidas deal dropped his net worth from over $1 billion to about $400 million.
Launched earlier this year, the Donda Academy — which is located in Simi Valley, California — is an unaccredited Christian private school for pre-k through 12th grade. According to their official website, “Donda Academy’s project-based learning model fosters the participation and progression of each student” and they are “planted firmly on the Word of God.”
