NBA star Steph Curry has partnered with Michelle Obama to launch their own sports drink, Plezi, to compete with the likes of Prime, Gatorade, and others.
The four-time NBA champion and former first lady announced the drink on Wednesday, March 26, to the surprise of many.
Michelle Obama launched Plezi Nutrition in 2023, and almost immediately got to work on building its hydration drink – Plezi – which is marketed as a “healthier sports drink option.”
It comes in three different flavors – Lemon Lime, Orange Mango Twist, and Tropical Punch – and is available at Walmart in California and on Amazon nationwide for $25 for a pack of 12.
“We’ve created something with smart ingredients and unbeatable flavor, so people can fuel their bodies the right way. No nonsense, no shortcuts — because the next generation deserves better,” Curry said in a statement to CNBC.
The company also revealed that Curry did more than just invest in the brand. According to CNBC, Curry helped with everything from the actual drink to the packaging of the bottles. His wife, Ayesha, helped create the drink’s formula.
Fans react to Curry’s collab with Michelle Obama
As news of the launch broke on social media, users shared their thoughts about the seemingly random collab between the NBA star and former first lady.
“The most random collab,” one user commented.
Another said: “Weirdest collab of the year.”
“This is such a random collab lmfao,” replied a third.
Curry joins the list of athletes with their name attached to a beverage brand, right beside Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and YouTuber turned WWE superstar Logan Paul.
Bryant invested heavily in Body Armor back in 2013, and Lebron partnered with PepsiCo for the launch of Mountain Dew Rise in 2021.
Logan Paul launched Prime Hydration in 2022 alongside fellow YouTuber KSI and quickly became one of the industry’s most popular drinks.. In March 2024, Prime out-sold Gatorade to become Walmart’s most popular sports drink in the US.
