Spaceballs Sequel in the Works with Mel Brooks Producing

A sequel to the beloved 1987 space opera parody Spaceballs is in the works with Mel Brooks producing, reports Variety.

Starring Josh Gad, the Amazon MGM Studios film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum from a screenplay penned by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad. Plot details are currently being kept under wraps.

The original film was co-written, produced, and directed by Brooks, who also starred. A spoof of popular sci-fi franchises like Star WarsStar Trek, and Aliens, it starred Bill Pullman as Luke Skywalker/Hans Solo parody Lone Starr, John Candy as Chewbacca parody Barf, and Rick Moranis as Darth Vader parody Lord Dark Helmet.

The Spaceballs sequel will be the second time Brooks has revisited a classic work in recent years. In 2023, he wrote and produced History of the World, Part II .

Gad is best known for starring in Broadway’s The Book of Mormon and voicing Olaf in the Frozen franchise, as well as playing Le Fou in the live-action Beauty and the Beast. Next up, he’s set to direct a Chris Farley biopic starring Paul Walter Hauser.
