The South by Southwest Music Festival returns to Austin, Texas, from March 11-16, 2024. The first wave of artists set to perform at the festival has now been announced. Among the hundreds set to perform are Dry Cleaning, Bodega, Cumgirl8, Hinds, Sen Morimoto, Mamalarky, Viji, Horse Jumper of Love, Kiwi Jr., Rawayana, and Lo Moon. Check out the full list here.
In February, the Union of Musicians and Allied Workers called on SXSW to increase artist payments, asking the festival to commit to paying $750 to all artists playing the festival in an official capacity. Eve 6, Guy Picciotto, Vijay Iyer, Zola Jesus, and Wednesday were among more than 120 artists that signed the open letter. After a UMAW rally in June at the New York offices of Penske Media Corporation—which owns half of the festival—Austin’s Parks and Recreation Board asked the city council to implement changes in artist pay at the festival. By the end of the month, SXSW announced it had raised fees for domestic artists performing at the festival: to $350 from $250 for bands, and to $150 from $100 for solo artists. International artists are not compensated.
