What a fascinating directorial duo Joe and Anthony Russo — the Russo Brothers — are.

On one hand, they’ve made some of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and effectively helmed both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, two of the biggest movies ever made. Impressive, to say the least.

Since then, though, their track record has been pretty, uh… trash. First came the Tom Holland-starring Cherry, which was just a complete mess and is totally irredemable. Then, earlier this year, they released The Gray Man on Netflix, which — while quite entertaining and a marked improvement from Cherry — was ultimately quite stupid. Hav any of you watched that movie more than once?

These days, the Russos are directing Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown in the upcoming Netflix film The Electric State, while also producing a bevy of projects, including a live-action Hercules remake that they have a simply nightmarish description for.

The Russo Brothers say that their upcoming live-action Hercules movie is a musical and that it will be inspired by TikTok

During a recent interview with Variety, Joe Russo said that their upcoming Hercules film will be a musical that’s inspired by the social media app TikTok. Yes, seriously.

“There are questions about how you translate it as a musical,” Russo says. “Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical.” [via Variety]

As for a potential return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — the Russos surely haven’t been shy about the possibility in recent years — Joe Russo said the pair won’t be ready to return to the MCU until “the end of the decade.”
