The Sympathizer Trailer was released on March 28, 2024, and everyone is curious about its premise. The HBO series is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel of the same name. Created by Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, the series stars Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Robert Downey Jr, Sandra Oh, Toan Le, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong, Kieu Chinh, and Marine Delterme.

The official synopsis reads, “The Sympathizer is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.”

In the trailer, Hoa Xuande plays the Captain, a spy, during the end of the Vietnam War. Just when he thinks his spy days are over, the Captain is assigned to be a plant in the United States. He has to report everything that’s happening to the Viet Cong. But living a double life during such testing times is not an easy task.

The Sympathizer trailer shows the challenges Hoa Xuande’s character comes across. What’s exciting is seeing Robert Downey Jr in different avatars! RDJ is the series’ antagonist and haunts the Captain often. But he’s not your usual bad guy. The Oscar-winner changes his appearance effortlessly, like a chameleon. There’s not much revealed in details about Robert’s characters, which adds more intrigue to how he will make things harder for our protagonist.

While Hoa Xuande looks promising and Robert Downey Jr is teasing us with his brilliance in the trailer, it’s a delight to see Sandra Oh in it. The makes have kept under wraps what Sandra plays in the HBO/MAX series. But she’s a brilliant actor, and we are confident she will own every scene she’s a part of. From the little we see of her in the trailer, Oh might have a much-needed emotional impact on the story.

Overall, The Sympathizer trailer looks compelling, with the right balance of thrill and comedy. It’s a risky move to set a black comedy series in the backdrop of a war. But if the novel has won the Pulitzer and if the showrunners Park Chan-wook and Don Mckellar succeed in adapting the story perfectly from the book to the screen, it’s going to be an exceptional watch.
