While filmmaker Matthew Vaughn has made plenty of comic book movies over the course of his career, the self-proclaimed “Superman nut” has yet to dive into the world of DC.

During an interview with BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast, the conversation of Superman came up, as we noted our surprise that no one has asked Vaughn about potentially directing DC’s upcoming Supergirl movie given his love of the universe.

After a discussion about how much Vaughn loves recently-cast Milly Alcock and that he “would consider” helming the film, we asked what he thinks about Superman: Red Son, the acclaimed “Elseworlds” comic book series written by Vaughn’s pal Mark Millar, which asks the question “What if Superman had been raised in the Soviet Union?”

“I know that they said they’re going to do Elseworlds type stuff — I didn’t even have this written down — are you a Red Son guy? Is that the approach you’d try to take?” we asked.

“I thought Red Son was one of the cleverest comics I’d ever read, and the current world we’re living in, it’s certainly become a lot more relevant because ignorance causes more issues, and I think the more we learn about Russia and the Russian history…” Vaughn said before having the epiphany of casting his Argylle lead Henry Cavill in the role.

“Wow, could you imagine remaking Red Son with Henry Cavill? That would be an interesting movie…”

When James Gunn took over DC Studios alongside co-CEO Peter Safran, he said the studio would develop Elseworlds projects — i.e. The Batman and Joker: Folie à Deux — making an adaptation of Superman: Red Son certainly possible.

Vaughn’s newest film Argylle, which features Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson alongside Cavill, releases in movie theaters on Friday, February 2.
