He’s just your average 11-year-old — who finds himself transported across the galaxy and is mistaken for the intergalactic Ambassador for our Planet Earth.
Here is the first full trailer for Elio, the latest Disney/Pixar toon that’s set to land in the summer. Have a look at the footage above and new poster below.
Voiced by Yonas Kibreab, space fanatic Elio has one big wish: to get abducted by aliens. He is obsessed, and it’s affecting his Earthly existence. “Your life isn’t up there, Elio,” his Aunt Olga (Zoe Saldaña) insists. “You need to make friends.”
The kid finds a way to beam a verbal plea into the void, begging: “If any aliens are listening, please come and get me. OK, bye, love you!”
Message received. Enter Glordon (Remy Edgerly), who also doesn’t fit back home and beams Elio up to his spaceship, saying, “We search the universe for dreamers and stargazers like you.” The boy has his first friend, and our young hero is beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide. But when he mistakenly is identified as Earth’s leader, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be.
Directed by Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi and Adrian Molina, the pic’s voice cast also boasts Brad Garrett Jameela Jamil and Shirley Henderson. America Ferrera originally was cast as Elio’s mom, Olga, and appeared in the first teaser, but she exited the project last summer, and Emilia Pérez Oscar winner Saldaña stepped in as Aunt Olga.
Disney opens Elio on June 20 in theaters.
