No longer the young belter, Mackie Empuerto learns to love his new voice

TNT Boys member, Mackie Empuerto, feels a bit frustrated now that he’s got a new, low voice, and he could no longer hit the high notes.

There was a time when Empuerto was able to perfectly sing songs by hitting high decibels, but growing up, his high registers vanished.

“Sobrang taas ng voice ko dati (My voice before was really high),” Mackie said in a virtual press conference yesterday, March 16, to promote his latest single, a cover version of “Can This Be Love.”

“Bumibirit kami talaga,” he said about his group, TNT Boys. “Sobrang taas.” (We really belt. Really high notes.)

But that was then. Now that his voice has gone lower and he initially felt frustrated by it.

“‘Yung paglaki ng voice ko, naging awkward for me. Na frustrate ako at na-sad. Sobrang hirap, kasi may mga songs na ipapakanta sa akin pero hindi ko na kaya,” he admitted.

(The change in my voice felt awkward for me. I got frustrated and sad. It’s so difficult, because there are songs that I am asked to sing but I can’t.)

He also believes that him reaching puberty had something to do with the transformation in his voice. But Empuerto has learned to accept the fact that he can no longer belt out. In time, he was able to overcome the frustration and learned how to use his new voice.

“Eventually, nasanay na din ako,” he said. (Eventually, I got used to it.)

With his new voice, Empuerto advises guys his age or boys who are in the puberty stage to not give up.

“Don’t stop singing. Normal ‘yan na dumadating sa buhay ng mga lalaki, ‘yung paglaki at pag-iba ng boses. Pero katulad ko, nakahanap ako ng genre na bumagay sa boses ko. Accept your new voice,” he said.

(Don’t stop singing. It’s normal among males, the voice getting bigger and changing. But like me, I was able to find a genre fit for my [new] voice. Accept your new voice.) AP/JB
