After its first season helped redefine the entire medium of television, the subsequent two seasons of HBO’s True Detective have been a mixed bag, to say the least.

The latest batch of episodes, however, apparently represents a return to form for the flagship HBO series as many of the early reviews say it’s easily the best since 2013’s season one, which famously starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

At this time, after 19 reviews, True Detective: Night Country has a 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

“New showrunner Issa López and new star Jodie Foster breathe new life into the old True Detective brand, with a fourth season that’s easily the most satisfying since the first,” says Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone in his review.

“The new season of True Detective is the best since the first, an absolute knockout from start to finish,” says a reviewer for Fangoria.

“If you need something to look forward to in this early part of 2024, I have four words for you — True Detective: Night Country. Gripping from the opening scene and wonderfully acted, it’s the best season since the first. It’s also exceptionally creepy,” tweeted a Vulture critic.

“True Detective Season 4 is the best season since the first, and Jodie Foster gives a performance so steely she could cut armor. Chilling, evocative & so good,” says Inverse in their review of the show.
