Nicolas Cage may reprise his role from Into the Spider-Verse in the upcoming Spider-Man Noir series. Hollywood insider publication The Ankler reports that the actor is “in serious talks to take on the lead role” in the untitled show, which Amazon ordered from Sony Pictures Television last year.
Cage voiced Spider-Man Noir in the 2018 animated film Into the Spider-Verse (although his character did not appear in the 2023 sequel Across the Spider-Verse). Taking inspiration from the Spider-Man who appears in the Marvel Noir comics, Cage’s character is a hardboiled Peter Parker from an alternate (and monochromatic) universe, with the mannerisms of a 30s-era Hollywood detective.
Just under one year ago, news broke that Sony was partnering with Prime Video for a live-action Spider-Man Noir series set in New York City circa 1930s. As originally reported by Variety, the untitled project features an “older, grizzled superhero,” is set in an alternate universe, and would not include Peter Parker. At this time, it is unclear if there’s been a change in direction for the series, or if Cage would be starring as a version of Spider-Man Noir who is not Peter Parker.
Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street, The Lost City) is set to write and executive produce the untitled project, which he developed with Into the Spider-Verse producers Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller.
Sony and Prime Video are also developing the Marvel-based series Silk: Spider Society from showrunner Angela Kang. Silk follows Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman who develops superpowers after being bitten by a spider.
On the film side, Sony’s latest Spider-movie Madam Web landed with a thud this weekend, garnering a dismal 13% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The next movie in Sony’s cinematic universe of Marvel characters is Kraven the Hunter, which is set for release on August 30th, 2024.
