Chris Evans will be making a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the next Avengers film. Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on May 1, 2026.
Evans famously starred as Steve Rogers/Captain America in the first decade of the MCU, appearing in a trilogy of Captain America films and four Avengers movies, in addition to cameo roles elsewhere.
According to a report from The Wrap, Chris Evans “will be involved in some capacity, but the extent and exact nature of his role is unknown.” Earlier this year, Evans featured as the Fantastic Four character Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, whom he portrayed in the 2005 film Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel.
The former Captain America star isn’t the only MCU stalwart set to make a return in Avengers: Doomsday, as the Russo brothers-directed film will also feature Robert Downey Jr. — who was essentially the George Washington of the MCU with Iron Man — as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom.
“Used to watch this s— religiously and I feel nothing reading this string of words,” said a viral response to the news that’s racked up over 2.3 million views on X, formerly Twitter.
“Never seen such a forced effort to rekindle the Avengers Endgame excitement of the MCU,” another fan depressingly posted.

This news, however, has Marvel fans feeling insanely depressed as a majority seems to believe it’s a symptom of the franchise’s lost ways since Avengers: Endgame in 2019 and its unwillingness to take risks — Doctor Doom is arguably the most famous villain in comic books other than Joker and he’s being played by the actor who played Iron Man, who will be 61 years old by the time Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters.
