A new Kindle app update on iOS fixes one of the most common BookTok complaints when it comes to buying ebooks on your phone.
When making an in-app purchase on your phone, the developer has to pay a percentage of that sale to Apple or Google, usually about 30%.
Due to these fees, companies opted to remove the ability to make certain purchases. Amazon is one of the biggest to make this change, as they removed Kindle ebook purchases from their apps in early 2022.
This quickly became a common pain point for users on BookTok, who often took to their channels and the comments to complain about having to open a browser just to buy a book.
“The fact that in the year of our lord 2024, you cannot buy a Kindle book from the Kindle app… what?!” one user said in a video. Others flocked to the comments to share that you can’t buy them from the Amazon app either, and others have trouble navigating to the page in a browser, as it would open the app by default.
Amazon adds “get book” button to Kindle app on iOS
On Tuesday, May 6, Amazon revealed an update to the iOS Kindle app that offers an easier way to buy your favorite ebook. Now, books are accompanied by a giant “Get Book” button instead of a warning saying you can’t buy it in-app.
It’s still not using the app, though. Clicking the button will send you to the corresponding browser page where you can then use Amazon’s “Buy now with 1 click” option.
It’s not as easy as only having to click one button like you could before, but it’s a welcome change regardless.
This has only been added to the Kindle app, however, and the Amazon shopping app still shows the unavailable warning.
Amazon’s update comes just days after a judge ruled in favor of Epic Games in a years-long lawsuit against Apple. With the ruling, app store rules now allow developers to provide a link to make a purchase outside of their apps.
This change also means that Epic Games plans on bringing Fortnite back to the iOS App Store, and says it’s coming sooner than later.
