Miley Cyrus Unveils Explosive New Song "Something Beautiful"

Miley Cyrus is back to share the first new songs from her upcoming album Something Beautiful: “Prelude” and title track “Something Beautiful.”

Though “Prelude” is mostly composed of orchestral, psychedelic arpeggios, widescreen synths, and Cyrus reading a spoken-word poem, “Something Beautiful” doubles down on the drama; the track begins with a patient, jazzy waltz and eventually bursts into an explosive chorus, with Cyrus’ voice slightly manipulated as she coos between pummeling hits from the band. Towards the end, the groove collapses into a psychedelic meltdown, with Cyrus howling “La-di-da-da-da” across wailing guitars, burning synths, and crashing drums.

The pair of songs both arrive with music videos, building out the visual world of Something Beautiful; Cyrus previously named Pink Floyd’s The Wall as a major inspiration point for the new project, taking the album’s sweeping, conceptual drama and imbuing it with “a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture.”

Both videos were directed by Cyrus, Jacob Bixenman, and Brendan Walter; “Prelude” finds Cyrus donned in the same 1997 Thierry Mugler outfit depicted in Something Beautiful’s album cover. “Something Beautiful,” on the other hand, features Cyrus performing the song in a dark studio, with sparks exploding all around her and her band as she enters the chorus. Watch both videos below.

Announced last week, Something Beautiful is Cyrus’ follow-up to 2023’s Endless Summer Vacation and will arrive on May 30th. She produced the album with trusted indie rock whisperer Shawn Everett, and worked further with Mandy director Panos Cosmatos to craft the album’s overarching visuals.
