Jeremy Renner has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade now, but according to the actor’s recent comments, it may be a while until we see him reprise his roll of Clint Barton/Hawkeye. Renner recently revealed that season two of the Disney+ series Hawkeye never came to be because he was lowballed by Marvel Studios.
Renner has been starring as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011, appearing in the films Thor, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame, and the first season of Hawkeye.
Based on Renner’s recent comments about the studio, however, the two sids appear to be at a bit of an impasse, leaving doubt about when he’ll appear as Hawkeye next, if at all.
“They asked me to do Season 2, and they offered me half the money. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money, and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount,’” Renner said on High Performance.
“I’m like, ‘I’m sorry. Why did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season?’ This is not Marvel. This isn’t not really Disney, it’s just the penny pinchers — the accountants.”
Renner says he told them to “go fly a kite” after being presented with what he considered to be an “insulting offer.”
“So, we didn’t see eye to eye on that, sadly. I still love the character, I’d still love to do it but I had to defend myself… It was a little disheartening that it didn’t happen, but that’s fine. I’m happy to let that go because my body’s probably thanking me, time and time again, that I’m not doing it right now. But, we’ll see.”
The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Thunderbolts*, was released in theaters today — Friday, May 2 — and is being hailed as a return to form for Marvel Studios, who have been a bit lost in the wilderness in the half-decade since the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
